Laboratories/Research Centers


The Department of Mechanical Engineering has a large number of laboratories with modern state-of-the-art equipment to serve all purposes from undergraduate level training to doctoral level research.
The department has arranged facilities for research in following groups:

A.     THERMAL AND FLUIDS ENGINEERING
1-      Thermodynamics Laboratory
The Thermodynamics laboratory offers facilities for research on various engines (5 Diesel engines, 3 Engine test units) and thermal machinery with variety of instrumentation e.g. fuel metering systems and dynamometers.
2-      Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
This laboratory has facilities for measurements of various parameters during fluid flow experiments, e.g. measuring the performance of Orifices, apparatus for measurements of Jet effects and Nozzle performance, Osborn- Reynolds apparatus for laminar and transient flow, and power losses measurements in Bends and Pipes.
3-      Compressible Flow  and Hydraulic Machines Laboratory
Facilities for experiments on Pelton Wheel, Axial Flow Impulse Turbine, Centrifugal and Axial Fans, Centrifugal Pumps and Compressors, and Compressible Flow Bench, are readily available with adequate instrumentation for measurements during experimentation.
4-      Heat Transfer Laboratory
Heat transfer laboratory is engaged in research and training related to Heat Conduction thorough Solids, Thermal Conductivity of Liquids and Gases, Free & Forced Convection Heat Transfer, Boiling Heat Transfer, Water to Water Turbulent Flow Heat Transfer, Heat Exchangers and Thermal Radiations.
5-      Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Laboratory
The HVAC laboratory has a wide range of equipment for research and training, e.g. Refrigeration Units, Air Conditioning Units, Heat Pump Units, Recirculating Air Conditioning Unit, Computerized Bench Top Cooling Tower, Vortex Tube Refrigerator, Thermo-Electric Heat Pump. The equipment is supplemented with computerized measuring devices for pressure, temperature and flow rates.
6-      Internal Combustion Engines and Power Plants Laboratories
The facilities in ICEPP laboratories include Fire Tube Boiler, Impulse Steam Turbine, Reaction Steam Turbine, Gas Turbine, Shell and Tube Type Condenser, Jet Condenser, Feed water Pump, Steam Power Plant; SI Engine, Electronic Fuel Injection System, Engine Test Bed, Fuel Pump, Fuel Injection System.  These facilities are equipped with modern measurement devices, thus enabling a wide range of experimentation possible on these machines.

B.      MECHANICS AND MECHANICAL DESIGN
7-      Mechanics of Machines Laboratory
This laboratory has numerous machines and supporting equipment for research on machine dynamics and vibrations analysis. A short description is: various Rotary and Reciprocating Mechanisms, Gear Trains, Bearings, Governors, Cam analysis mechanisms, various Steering mechanisms, Static and Dynamic Balancing machines, Rotating and Reciprocating Balancing machines, Linear and Torsional Vibration machines.
8-      Mechanics of Materials Laboratory
The facilities available are used for measurement of: Young’s Modulus and Modulus of Rigidity of various materials, Bending moment and Shearing force, Deflection of Beam, Torsion Of Shafts, combined Bending & Torsion of Beams, Asymmetric Bending, Bending of Continuous beam, Deflections and Bending of Curved Beams and Bars, Deflection Flat Plates.
9-      Stress Analysis Laboratory
This laboratory has a wide range of facilities for experimental stress analysis. The key devices are: Tensometer, Universal Testing Machine, Shimadzu Universal Testing Machine, Brinell Hardness Tester, Rockwell Hardness Tester, Plastic Torsion Test Machine, Charpy Impact Tester, Electrical resistance strain gauge, Calibration system of electrical resistance strain gauges and Polariscopes.
10-   Computational Engineering Laboratories
There are 3 computer laboratories for use of advanced unconventional tools in mechanical engineering. These unconventional tools are softwares and supporting hardware facilities for Computer Aided Design, Finite Element Analysis, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. The department has CAD/FEA/CFD laboratories with many leading softwares installed on state of the art systems for design and analysis of mechanical and thermal systems, e.g. Solid Edge/Unigraphics, Auto Desk INVENTOR, Pro-E, CATIA, Adams, ANSYS, Fluent, MATLAB, and Maple.

C.      AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING CENTER (AEC)
The department has excellent facilities for research and training in the area of Automotive Engineering. AEC has 46 different units, where each unit consists of numerous machines, devices and computerized instrumentation coupled for specific purposes.
The key areas of research are: Measurement and treatment of various engines’ emissions, performance and emissions evaluation of various engines at different operating conditions; Mechanical power transmission (power/gear trains) from engine; clutches, brakes and vehicle control; Gas and liquid fuels research for various engines; Fuel injection systems.

D.     INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL ENGINEERING
11-   Instrumentation Laboratory
Instrumentation and Control technologies are at the most active area of research. This laboratory has state-of-art equipment to date. A short list of the facilities available is: UCP/UCPN/UCPCV Process Control Module, Flow Test Modules, Vibration and/or Deformation Test Module, Liquid Level Test Module, PLC Trainer, Temperature Test Module, Transducer & Instrumentation Trainer, Industrial Servo-systems Trainer, Tachometer Test Module, Sensors and Transducer Test Modular System, Basic Unit, Pressure Test Module.

E.      ENERGY ENGINEERING
12-   Renewable Energy Resources
RER laboratory has liberal facilities for experiments on Solar Powered Stirling Engine, Solar Water Heater, Solar Desalination Unit and Solar Panels, for evaluating the potential of solar power harnessing in specified conditions.
13-   Energy Technologies Development Center (ETDC)
Development of Pakistan is not possible without stable and sufficient energy supply. Due to the current conditions of energy shortage, the department is in process of setting up ETDC for research on sustainable energy resources.
